We decided to do some Mexican cooking with babies and make Guacamole – an avocado dip.

We needed 2 avocados, 1 small tomato, 1 small onion, 1 clove of garlic, some lemon juice, salt and pepper. We all washed our hands and sat around the table. As I cut open the avocado I passed it around to the children to look inside at the big seed, and to have a smell. The children were asked questions about the avocado. We scooped it out from the skin and put it into the bowl. We chopped up the onion and garlic with our turbo chef – all the babies had a go at pressing the button . , We put it into the bowl with the avocado. The tomato was then chopped up and placed in the bowl as well.

Once all the ingredients were mixed together we put a small amount onto everyone’s plate with some Mexican tortilla triangles.

The children were all engaged in this activity.  No one wanted to get up or move away from the table.  They were all keen to find out what was going to be the next step. I asked the children if they liked cooking and they all responded saying yes by nodding with smiles on their faces.
